The light with the cover off, the transformer, and the switchboard. Those three tell us whether yours is a straight swap or a bigger job, and you get a number without anyone visiting.
First, we look at installs on site. The shell decides the method: concrete takes a new niche cut into it, and fibreglass usually takes a surface-mounted unit, and that is not a call to make off a photo.
Pool dark and the rest of the yard fine? That is the light, not the system, and usually the globe or the seal. If it trips the RCD every time you switch it on, water is in the fitting. Leave it off and call us, because resetting it hides the fault. And a pool that looks dull with the light still working is often a lens gone cloudy in chlorinated water, which is a clean and reseal rather than a new unit.
Pool lighting sits in the zones the wiring rules treat most strictly, and the certificate of compliance is the first paperwork an insurer asks for. Ours is issued before we leave and lodged with Building Commission NSW under Contractor Licence 389893C.
Usually not. Most niche-mounted lights lift out on their cable with the pool full and we swap them poolside. Surface-mounted and older fittings need the water dropped, and you hear that before we book.
In most cases yes. Retrofit units sit in standard niches and run off the transformer already there. If that transformer is undersized or the cable has perished, it goes on the quote as its own line.
Stop switching it on. An RCD tripping means water is in the fitting, and resetting it masks the fault.
