What This Article Covers

A quick overview before you dive in:

  • What we check before booking: whether your home has single or three phase power, and whether your switchboard has spare capacity or needs work first.
  • Choosing a charger, from the models we supply to one you've bought yourself, and placing it where the cable reaches your car, with what to check if it will sit outdoors.
  • How the dedicated circuit is run from the switchboard, what the starting price covers and what longer cable runs add, with the conditions behind them.
  • Why the charger gets its own safety switch and an isolator, what mounting, connecting and app setup involve, and when charging from solar can work.
  • How the work is tested and certified, how long the job takes, and what our warranty covers, including for a charger you supplied.
  • Whether the charger can go on a pedestal when there's no suitable wall, and how that's priced.

Installing a wall charger at home comes down to six steps: checking your power and switchboard, choosing the charger and where it goes, running a dedicated circuit, fitting the safety switch and isolator, mounting and connecting the charger, then testing and certifying the work. This guide walks through each one, so you know what happens before the booking and on the day itself.

It's based on the home charger installations we carry out at Impulse Electrical Enterprise. We're licensed and insured, and our director, Matthew Neil, supervises every job. Still deciding whether you need a wall charger at all? Our guide to charging an EV at home compares a portable cable with a wall charger.

Step 1: Checking Your Power and Switchboard

Before anything is booked, we look at whether your home has single or three phase power and whether your switchboard has spare capacity for a charger. A single phase home can take a charger of up to 7 kW, while three phase opens up 11 kW or 22 kW. A 22 kW charger only helps if your car can accept that much on AC, so check your car's AC charging limit first. If you don't know your power type, a clear photo of your switchboard lets us check it for you.

An older or full switchboard may need work before a charger can go in. If yours needs a switchboard upgrade, we explain the options and quote that work separately, so you see it before you commit.

Step 2: Choosing the Charger and Where It Goes

Next comes the charger and its position. We supply and install the Tesla Gen 3 Wall Connector, Ocular LTE Plus V3, Ocular IQ Home Solar and Zappi chargers, or we can fit a charger you've bought yourself once we've confirmed it suits your home and switchboard.

The spot needs to be close enough to where you park for the charging cable to reach the car's charging port comfortably. If the charger will sit outdoors, choose one that's rated for outdoor use; we check this with you before we book.

Step 3: Running a Dedicated Circuit

A wall charger draws a heavy load for hours at a time, so it gets a circuit of its own that isn't shared with anything else in the house. The electrician runs new cable from the switchboard to the charger's position.

How far that cable has to run has a big effect on the price. Installation starts from $1,050 + GST for single phase and $1,350 + GST for three phase. A run of over 10 and up to 20 metres adds $350 + GST on single phase or $475 + GST on three phase, and a run of over 20 metres adds $650 + GST on single phase or $950 + GST on three phase.

Installation prices include up to 10 metres of cable from the switchboard. They assume your switchboard has enough spare capacity and there's reasonable access for the cable. The charger, longer cable runs and surge protection cost extra, and switchboard work, pedestals and enclosures are quoted separately. Your final price is confirmed before we book the installation. These prices are current as of October 2026.

Step 4: Fitting the Safety Switch and Isolator

The new circuit is protected by its own safety switch, so a fault on the charger's circuit cuts the power quickly. An isolator is also fitted near the charger, giving a clear way to switch it off at the charger itself for maintenance or in a fault.

On a recent Burwood job, the customer had already bought their charger. We ran a dedicated 6 mm² cable to it, protected the circuit with an RCBO safety switch, fitted an isolator and an enclosure, then certified the work.

Step 5: Mounting and Connecting the Charger

With the circuit in place, the charger is mounted on the wall and wired in. Where your charger has an app, we set it up and show you how it works, so you can check charging sessions from your phone.

Charging From Solar

If you have solar panels, the Ocular IQ Home Solar and the Zappi are the solar-ready chargers we supply. They can top up your car with excess solar power, but only if your inverter and monitoring setup allows it, so we look at that before you decide on a charger.

Step 6: Testing and Certification

Once everything is connected, the installation is tested. NSW rules require anyone doing electrical wiring work to hold an electrical licence, and the electrician who tests the work submits a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work (CCEW) to Building Commission NSW. You get a copy for your records.

How Long Does It Take?

Plan on a few hours for a standard home installation. If the cable has a long way to travel, or the switchboard needs work first, expect more time on site. See your price in about a minute with our EV charger installation cost estimator.

Questions About Getting a Wall Charger Installed

Can the charger go on a pedestal instead of a wall?

Yes. If there's no suitable wall near where you park, the charger can be mounted on a pedestal instead. Pedestals and enclosures aren't part of the starting price, so we quote them separately.

What do I get when the job is finished?

A working, tested charger, app setup where your charger has one, and a copy of your Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work. Our workmanship is covered by our warranty, and products and parts come with a 2 to 7 year manufacturer's warranty, depending on the product. If you supplied the charger yourself, our workmanship warranty covers the installation and the charger's own warranty comes through the place you bought it.
