A quick overview before you dive in:
How much does an electrician cost in Sydney? It depends on how they price the job and what the job involves. Some charge a call-out fee plus an hourly rate, others give a fixed price, and many use both depending on the work. If you're searching for an electrician's cost per hour, it's worth knowing that a fixed quote tells you more: it's the price you'll actually pay.
This guide comes from Impulse Electrical Enterprise, a Sydney electrician based in Strathfield. We're licensed and insured, and our director, Matthew Neil, supervises every job. Below are the starting prices we publish for common jobs, so you have real numbers to compare: an LED downlight from $73 + GST, a ceiling fan replacement from $150 + GST, a new double power point from $357 + GST and a switchboard upgrade from $1,200 + GST. Every price is confirmed with you before any work starts.
When you compare electricians, ask what's included: is the call-out fee on top of the hourly rate, are parts extra, and is the quote a fixed price or an estimate?
These are the starting prices we publish on our service pages. Each assumes a standard installation with accessible wiring; your final price is confirmed in a free, fixed quote before we start.

We don't publish an hourly rate: for planned work, we give you a fixed price before we start. For an emergency, the electrician makes the fault safe first, then talks you through any repair, which only goes ahead once you approve the price.
Get quotes for the same scope of work, in writing, and check each one says whether it's a fixed price and what's included. In NSW, an electrician must complete a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work (CCEW) when they install, add to, change or repair wiring or equipment, even for a like-for-like swap, so check the quote includes it. For switchboard work, our guide to comparing switchboard quotes lists what every quote should include.
It varies between electricians, and work after hours costs more. We don't publish an hourly rate: for planned work, we give you a fixed price in a free quote before we start. Our after-hours emergency call-out is $250 + GST, and any repair after that is priced and approved by you before it goes ahead.
There's no call-out fee in Annandale, Dulwich Hill, Haberfield, Leichhardt, Petersham and St Peters during business hours. Elsewhere, there's no extra travel fee in business hours just because you're outside those suburbs, although jobs more than about 40 minutes away may have a travel or call-out fee, which we'll tell you about before booking. After hours, the call-out is $250 + GST in every suburb we attend.
