What This Article Covers

A quick overview before you dive in:

  • What to look for in a home EV charger: charging speed, single or three phase power, app control and solar charging.
  • How the four chargers we install compare: the Tesla Wall Connector, Ocular LTE Plus, Ocular IQ Home Solar and Zappi, with their prices + GST.
  • Which charger suits which home, from a simple overnight setup to charging from your own solar panels.
  • What installation costs, and what to check before you buy, including your car's charging limit and your switchboard.

The best EV charger for a Sydney home is the one that matches your power supply, your car and how you want to charge. For most homes on single phase power, any good 7 kW wall charger adds a useful amount of range overnight. The differences show up in app control, solar charging, three phase options and price.

This guide comes from Impulse Electrical Enterprise, a Sydney electrician based in Strathfield. We install home EV chargers across Sydney, and these are the four we supply. We're licensed and insured, and our director, Matthew Neil, supervises every job. Prices are the ones in our estimator, current as of October 2026, and are confirmed before we book your installation.

What to Look For in a Home EV Charger

  • Charging speed. Single phase home chargers run at up to about 7 kW. Three phase chargers can run at 11 or 22 kW, but only if your home has three phase power and your car can accept it. Many EVs charge at up to 11 kW on AC, so check your car before paying for 22 kW.
  • App control and scheduling. An app lets you see what the charger is doing and schedule charging for cheaper times, such as off-peak, or the three free midday hours if you're on a Solar Sharer plan.
  • Solar charging. Solar-ready chargers can charge your car from spare solar power. Whether that works for you depends on your charger, inverter and monitoring setup.
  • A tethered cable. All four chargers below come in tethered versions with a Type 2 cable attached, so there's no cable to carry around.

Tesla Gen 3 Wall Connector

Not just for Tesla owners: Tesla says the Wall Connector is compatible with most electric vehicles, as long as the plug matches your car's charging inlet. In Australia it runs at up to 7.4 kW on single phase and up to 11 kW on three phase. You connect it to Wi-Fi to control, schedule and track charging in the Tesla app. We recently installed one in a garage in Russell Lea.

Ocular LTE Plus V3

An app-controlled charger for everyday home charging, available for single phase (7 kW) or three phase (22 kW) power. Ocular's wall charger range lists it with a 6 metre Type 2 cable and an LCD screen for live charging feedback. It's the most affordable charger we supply.

Ocular IQ Home Solar

A solar-ready charger that can work as a standard charger or charge from your solar panels, with three charging modes to suit your solar production. It comes in 7 kW and 22 kW versions. Whether solar charging works for you depends on your inverter and monitoring setup, which we check first. In Burwood Heights, for example, we installed a 22 kW three phase Ocular IQ Home Solar with a 15 metre cable run.

Zappi Multiphase

A charger built for solar charging. According to myenergi, zappi has a Fast mode that charges at full power, an Eco mode that mixes solar with grid power, and an Eco+ mode that pauses until there's enough spare solar. The zappi multiphase can be set to 7 kW for single phase or 22 kW for three phase power, and myenergi says it needs a permanent internet connection over Wi-Fi or Ethernet.

Which Charger Suits Your Home?

  • You want simple overnight charging at the lowest cost: the Ocular LTE Plus.
  • You drive a Tesla, or want a well-known charger with a good app: the Tesla Wall Connector. If you have three phase power, remember it tops out at 11 kW.
  • You have solar panels and want to charge from them: the Zappi or the Ocular IQ Home Solar, once we've checked your inverter and monitoring setup.
  • You already have a charger: we can install a compatible charger you've already bought, once we've checked it suits your home and switchboard.

What to Check Before You Buy

  • Your car's AC charging limit. If your car accepts 7 kW on AC, a 22 kW charger won't charge it any faster.
  • Your power supply. Most Sydney homes have single phase power, which suits a 7 kW charger. Our guide to single or three phase power explains the difference.
  • Your switchboard. The charger needs its own circuit and protection, and an older or full switchboard may need work first, which we quote separately.
  • The cable run. The price includes up to 10 metres of cable from the switchboard; longer runs cost more.

Our guide to what changes the cost of a home EV charger goes through each of these in detail.

Getting Your Charger Installed

We supply and install all four chargers above as part of our home EV charger installation, and we set the charger up and show you the app where it has one. A wall charger is electrical wiring work, so in NSW it must be installed by a licensed electrician, who tests it and gives you a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work. To see a price for your home, use our EV charger cost estimator: it takes about a minute, and we confirm the final price with you before we book the installation.

Questions About Choosing a Home EV Charger

What is the best EV charger for home use?

It depends on your home and car. For most single phase homes, a 7 kW app-controlled charger such as the Ocular LTE Plus or Tesla Wall Connector is plenty. If you want to charge from solar, look at the Zappi or Ocular IQ Home Solar.

Can I use a Tesla Wall Connector with a non-Tesla car?

Tesla says the Wall Connector is compatible with most electric vehicles, as long as the plug matches your car's charging inlet. Check your car before you buy.

Do I need a 22 kW charger?

Only if your home has three phase power and your car can charge at more than 11 kW on AC. Many EVs charge at up to 11 kW on AC, so check your car first.

Can you install a charger I've already bought?

Yes. We can install a compatible charger you've already bought, once we've checked it suits your home and switchboard. Our workmanship warranty covers the installation, and the charger itself is covered through the place you bought it.
